Tunnel railway – Oberhasli power stations (Switzerland)

Following flooding which seriously affected two of three tunnel railways, only one vehicle could be repaired using existing spare parts. Another solution had to be found for the second vehicle, which involved a standard DC chopper, a standard frequency transformer in order to increase the battery voltage and the use of an asynchronous motor.

In this operation, Stadler Winterthur provided the mechanical engineering services and carried out the mechanical and electrical conversion. Railtec Systems was responsible for the entire electrical engineering side. For the control engineering works products from the MAS-T range manufactured by Selectron Systems AG were implemented.

On account of the very variable conditions in the tunnel, all the components had to be of high quality to ensure that they could meet the requirements at all costs.

This applied especially to the safety equipment so that the vehicle could be stopped reliably under all conditions and on the steepest stretches of track. All the safety functions have been realised directly using hardware solutions so that they can still be relied on to work properly even if the control system fails.

The successful completion of the project provided evidence that even special vehicles can be equipped with standard components. This is particularly advantageous in view of the wider availability.
